Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio
The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
