Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
