The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
