The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
