Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
